1. Jasmine Porch

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Located inside The Sanctuary Hotel, Jasmine Porch is one of the first places you should head to for authentic Lowcountry cooking. Named the "Best Down-Home Cookery" by the prestigious Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report, Jasmine Porch's shrimp and grits are quite legendary, but the menu goes well beyond that. You can indulge in fresh seafood, Southern classics, and one of the best breakfasts on the island.

The cherry on top? The dining room's ambience is complete with Charleston brick walls, hewn oak floors, and briny ocean air.

Local favorites: She-Crab Bisque, Fried Green Tomatoes, Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich, The Jasmine Burger, Shrimp & Grits, Calabash Fried Oysters & Okra, Pan-Seared Local Catch, Peach Tea-Brined Pork Chop, and Jasmine Porch Filet Mignon. For dessert, the standouts are the House-Made Sorbet, Peach Bread Pudding, and Strawberry Shortcake.

2. The Ocean Room

Dinner

The Ocean Room is South Carolina's only Forbes Five-Star restaurant and has also earned AAA Four-Diamond status. This is the place locals go when they feel like dressing up for dinner or celebrating special occasions. The focus here is premium steaks, locally sourced ingredients, impeccable service, and a wine cellar with more than 1,000 labels.

Just remember the dress code: collared shirts and closed-toe shoes are required for gentlemen and boys over eight.

The must-try items on the menu? Here they are: Tuna Carpaccio, American Hackleback Caviar, Kiawah Oyster Roast, Filet Mignon, Tomahawk Ribeye, and Black Sea Bass. Favorite sides include creamed spinach, truffle pommes frites, and lobster mac & cheese.

3. The Atlantic Room

Dinner

Looking for fresh seafood with a view? The Atlantic Room is always a good bet.

Overlooking The Ocean Course, the restaurant focuses on sustainably sourced regional seafood through South Carolina's Good Catch Initiative. The signature Seafood Stew, aka Country Captain, is unmissable. The combination of shrimp, crab, mussels, clams, fresh fish, and Carolina Gold rice in a fragrant curry broth is simply a match made in heaven.

Make sure to reserve a table close to sunset, and you'll have front-row seats to one of the island's finest ocean views.

Popular picks: Country Captain, Shrimp & Grits, Southern Oyster Rockefeller, and Lobster and Caviar Deviled Eggs. For a sweet ending, do yourself a favor and order the Chocolate Buttermilk Torte or Coconut Lime Panna Cotta.

4. Hege's Restaurant

Dinner

Many locals consider Hege's the finest independent restaurant near Kiawah. Located at Freshfields Village, just outside Kiawah's main gate, this intimate French bistro mixes classic French techniques with Lowcountry ingredients, creating a menu packed with seafood delicacies, cooked-to-perfection steaks, and seasonal dishes.

If you're visiting during summer, reservations are highly recommended.

Local favorites: Moules au Curry, Lowcountry She Crab Soup, Maryland Crab Cake, Steak Tartare, Tomahawk Pork Chop, Prime Ribeye, and Paella Valenciana.

5. La Tela Pizzeria

Lunch & Dinner

Since 2009, La Tela Pizzeria has been the locals' go-to place for authentic Italian flavors.

The family-run restaurant specializes in authentic Neapolitan pizzas baked in a wood-fired brick oven alongside house-made traditional Italian dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients, including South Carolina shrimp.

Here are our favorite picks: For pasta, the Ricotta Cavatelli is a sensation among patrons. Must-try pizzas include Prosciutto di Parma, Sausage, and Gorgonzola. Their Fried Mozzarella and Fried Calamari are also amazing.

6. FortyEight Wine Bar & Kitchen

Lunch & Dinner

Wine lovers should definitely reserve one evening to dine here. Or, if you don't mind savoring great wine during lunch, they're also open for that.

Instead of ordering by the glass, guests receive a smart card that unlocks 48 self-pour wine stations where you can sample small pours, compare different styles, and pair them with seasonal small plates, seafood, or mouthwatering steaks.

Must-tries: FortyEight Shrimp Scampi, Pan-Seared Salmon, Sesame Marinated Swordfish, Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes, Steak Frites, and Pork Tenderloin.

7. Café Eugenia

Breakfast & Lunch

Breakfast, lunch, picnic supplies, charcuterie boards—Café Eugenia is a mandatory spot for all that.

Café Eugenia is a breakfast and lunch spot for Mediterranean-inspired dishes as well as a gourmet market where you can buy picnic supplies or delicacies to stock your vacation rental, such as their amazing charcuterie boards.

Grab a table outside on the sidewalk or inside in their casual dining room, explore the menu of incredible sandwiches and salads, and don't skip their pastries for dessert. The Brown Butter Marshmallow Bar, Brown Butter Chocolate Chunk Cookie, and Cinnamon Coffee Cake are seriously good.

Local favorites: Bacon, Egg, & Cheddar Sandwich, Breakfast Burrito, Meat Quiche, Meat Frittata, Smoked Salmon Toast, Café Eugenia House-Made Biscuits, Charcuterie Sandwich, Café Eugenia Jambon Beurre, Gigante Bean Antipasti Salad, Mediterranean Tuna Salad, and Pickled Shrimp.

8. The Co-Op

Breakfast & Lunch

Also located at Freshfields Village, The Co-Op is well known among the locals because of their sandwiches and the famous frosé, an icy rosé cocktail. You don't need to complicate things here. Order popular options like the California Turkey or Cowboy Chicken sandwich, couple your food with a frosé and there you have one of the best Kiawah-style meals.

Must-order delicacies: California Turkey, Cowboy Chicken, Cubano, The Masters, and tuna salad. For breakfast, their most popular dishes are the Meat Lover’s sandwich, Sausage, Egg, & Cheese, Whipped Ricotta Toast, and Breakfast Burrito.

9. The Royal Tern

Dinner

Just 15 to 20 minutes away, The Royal Tern on Johns Island is another local favorite for wood-fired cooking, with fresh local seafood and premium steaks taking center stage. Before your entrée arrives, don't forget to order the warm, buttery Fran’s Yeast Rolls with garlic chive butter.

Must-tries: Yellowfin Tuna, Rock Shrimp Po’ Boy, Ribeye, and Filet Mignon. Sides like Garlic French Fries, Scalloped Potato Gratinée, and Summer Succotash are also amazing.

10. Wild Olive

Dinner

Wild Olive has long been one of Johns Island's hardest reservations to secure, and for good reason. Set inside a charming cottage, the restaurant focuses on Italian cooking using fresh, seasonal ingredients from nearby farms whenever possible. Expect nothing less than stellar handmade pasta, slow-cooked ragùs, fresh seafood, wood-grilled meats, and an excellent wine list.

Must-orders: Bruschetta, Lobster Risotto, Ricotta and Goat Cheese Gnocchi, Tagliatelle alla Bolognese, "Sunday Gravy" Lasagna, Grilled Grass-Fed Rib Eye Steak, Scallops & Grits, Crispy Yellowfin Tuna, and Chicken Parmesan. For dessert, the Blueberry Cobbler Cheesecake and Espresso Martini Cake are a feast in the mouth.

What Should You Eat on Kiawah Island?

Some dishes simply belong on every Kiawah itinerary.

Shrimp and grits should be at the top of the list. This classic Lowcountry favorite appears across the region, but Jasmine Porch serves one of the island's most celebrated versions. Fresh shrimp, creamy grits, and rich Southern flavors come together exactly as they should.

Seafood is another essential. Order oysters whenever they're in season, try a bowl of seafood stew, or tuck into fresh local fish straight off the coast.

Barbecue deserves equal attention. South Carolina does things differently, particularly with its signature mustard-based sauce. It's tangy, slightly sweet, and unlike the tomato-heavy barbecue sauces visitors often expect.

If your trip lines up with oyster season, buy tickets for the Mingo Point Oyster Roast & BBQ. This long-running tradition combines roasted oysters, classic Southern barbecue, live music, and waterfront views along the Kiawah River.
